Broadcast seeds directly and thinly in a band 2 inches wide, spaced
about ¼ inch apart.
Cover seeds only lightly with a bit of soil.
To assist in the break-up of the soil and carrot seed emergence, plant
some radish seed along with the carrots. Place the radish seed
carefully though, to avoid a mess once things start coming up.
For example, sow radish seed about ½ inch depth at regular spaces,
cover, then sow the carrot seeds afterwards.
Make successive sowings of carrots ever two weeks up until July 15th,
for a continuous supply.
Mis-shapen roots are usually caused by 'crusting' of the soil. This
can easily be prevented by maintaining good, frequent watering.
Hairy-rooted, stunted carrots are caused by over-application of
fertilizer, improper weed control, or irregular weather.
In the case of over-fertilizing, use a good all-purpose fertilizer
ONLY every couple of weeks, and even then, WATER IT IN!!
Where weeds are the problem, you need to develop some good
garden-keeping habits!!
Days to maturity: 58 -70 days.
