Peas
Sow outdoors in early April if the ground is workable.
Peas are hardy, and will withstand most Spring frosts.
Plant several seeds together in each drill, as peas don't mind being
somewhat crowded, and in fact, each plant helps to sup****t the other
this way.
Stakes should be placed about every 8 inches, and plants strung so the
tendrils will naturally climb up on them.
Home gardeners should try the pea varieties which produce more peas
per pod, or more pods per node.
One variety which came out in 1981 was 'Novella' , which is
semi-leafless, self-sup****ting, and produces two pods per node.
In comparison to some older varieties, it produced literally double
the crop.
Peas love sweet soil. Add lime as necessary, and keep well watered.
Plant a new bed of peas in later summer for a Fall crop.
Peas do not do well in extreme heat, so choose an area you can provide
good ventilation in and some shade in summer.
