The ‘Greenhouse Effect’!!
Not everyone can afford a greenhouse. Besides, not every gardener
would want one, due to lack of space, or lack of interest in starting
plants from seed. Some gardeners love to garden, but prefer to buy
plants already started.
However, if you love watching things grow from seed, here’s a few
ideas you might consider for a ‘makeshift’ greenhouse --- ideas that
I’ve tried and tested, and they work!
The first bonus is the cost-efficiency. The second is the fact that
the material can be re-used for several seasons before you need to
replace the material. The third is, cloches are very easily dismantled
and moved to new locations. :O)
Cloche:
This is easily made, using construction-grade plastic for better
retention of heat.
Simply roll out the plastic in the area where you want to place the
cloche… fasten down the one side with planks or rocks, or bury under
the soil.
Place the seeds or plants you want protected, and place stakes every
few feet in the row to hold the plastic off the top of the plants.
Support the plastic in the same way on the other side of the row as
first described.
Voila!! Instant and inexpensive cloche!!
I’ve used these to start off the more tender seed earlier in the
season, before the last killing frosts, and it worked great!
Next, please see the post on cold frames.
