I thought of them when I read your first para.  You could also use dry
sand 
or even bran which was an old fa****oned storage method.  Inspect often.

Metal fly mesh is still around but in fewer and fewr places.  And I think
a 
rat could eat it anyway.

Sheet metal with nail holes pumched in it would work too or very fine bird

cage wire.
