it has to be completely ripened before it can be eaten...if not ripened you
will have a very unpleasant experience with oxalic acid crystals....when
the
fruit is fully formed you can cut it and place it upright with the just
the
base in water (change the water frequently) the scales will schrivel and
fall off...that is when it may be eaten. Some chose to eat it in
segments,
slicing off the part that has been exposed and leaving the rest to
continue
ripening
