Tomatoes love heat/sun. I am originally from KY where I used to be
able to
grow wonderful tomatoes. I haven't had any luck at all with them
since I
moved down here - I even tried growing them in large containers with
good
soil because I thought that was the problem.
There are so many durned bugs and birds eating on them - that was the
problem I had. I've had so many failures with tomatoes since moving
down
here that I just quit trying.

ahh.. come on.. mine are doing absolutly wonderful... so you can grow
them..
I just dug right in my yard.. went out to home depot.. got two plants
about 8 inches
tall in a pint container.. I bought a bag of time released
fertilizer for tomato and veggie
plants.. I dug a hole.. and put a left over fish body after I took
the meat off.. and put that in the hole.. added about an inch of soil
on top of the fish.. then set the plant on top of that... watered it
real good.. packed the soil firmly.. added the time released
nutrients..
staked them up with a piece of wood.. and put a tomato cage around
it.. I have vines
that are over 8 feet long. I thought they wouldn't grow in the
heat.. or the sandy soil..
but I was wrong. The plants get afternoon shade.. and morning sun..
from.. about 8:30am- 2:30 pm... then the sun hits them late in the
evening.. just before sunset.
Keep on trying.. these are great tomatos.. I am growing cherry tomatos
and roma tomatos.
----------------------------------------------------------
As for the lettuce (I'm not sure about cabbage), I only know about
leaf
lettuce - and that is a cold weather plant like broccoli, peas, etc -
we
always started them early back home. Tomatoes would live if you
planted
them earlier but they wouldn't grow/thrive until it got hot.
--------------------------------------------------------
I am testing the leaf lettuce.. the rest I am saving for the cooler
temp garden in the fall and winter.
