Hello,
I've never seen a 2 stroke lawn mower but there must be some. It is almost
certainly a 4 stroke with a Briggs and Stratton engine. To confirm, look
for
a small oil filler cap, which should have a dipstick attached to it.
Not sure why you are questioning what the previous owner told you as if he
had used a 2stroke with plain petrol it would have siezed up long ago.
