I've had similar irritations with ants in my lawn Andy, same soil
characteristics (near ****tsmouth). Nothing chemical I have tried gets rid
of them for more than a couple of weeks. Basically I think they like the
type of soil.
I agree with the poster who said keep the grass cut, keep dispersing the
displaced soil (I use a hose sometimes but a rake is also good) and just
keep disrupting their work. But if my experience is anything to go by,
you'll not get rid of them.
