a lot of the land was overrun by lava and some people wanted to give
their lots to the county to not have to pay property taxes anymore and
the county didn't accept it.
Nevertheless, there are still people living there ...
If you are seriously interested in some of the abandoned land, an ad in
the Hawaii Tribune Herald may get you further than a post in
hawaii.gardening.
You could write to land owners directly if you get the information you
need from the Hawaii County Property Tax web site.
Tax map keys start with (3-)1-1-65 through -71 and (3-)1-1-102 through
-118.
