Sorry to be late in responding. Maren, avocados love the Kona side of
the island. There are many wild ones, all bearing fruit. I even see
tourists, stop their cars and dash out and get one<g> from the road.
Some how our leeward microclimate is well suited for avocados.
If California did not have that powerful political action group Calavo
(I think that's the name), Kona would be happily cultivating and
sending many avocados to the US mainland. Calavo wants to keep out
our wonderful massive avocados so they can be sure their teeny little
Haas have a long term market. That PAC is very powerful.
