Sorry Mac, it is neither a tree nor a shrub, it is a herbaceous perennial. 
It is a tall Astillbe ( common name goats beard ). I have a couple of them

in my garden along with a number of the dwarf varieties.

It is actually a pretty good plant for a spot that is partly shaded as
well.
