You can split the dahlia tuber (bulb) into as many bulbs as you see
but the main point is that it must have an eye in order to flower. I
prefer to divide mine in the spring since the eyes tend to be more
visible then. I dust mine with an anti-fungal powder and store in
peat moss in the basement all winter, then divide just before I plant.

I'm not really sure if it is necessary to divide them and/or what the
consequences are if you don't. I would like to know the answer to
that myself!!
